On June 27, the troop sat down for lunch at our new camp site after having hiked all morning. Someone noticed smoke rising over a small hill next to where we were sitting. We climbed the hill and found a small fire moving through the dry brush. For the next few hours we monitored the fire and did what we could to contain it. There were many signs that it was caused by lightning. In some of the pictures you can see where lightning stripped the bark off the tree. The tallest tree in the area had a band of missing bark near the top that spiraled its way down. On other trees, you could see markings on the surface of the bark that suggested that lightning traveled down the surface. We also found a hole in the ground with fresh dirt thrown around the area. Our guess is that the lightning struck the night before and caused embers to smolder all night long before bursting into flames the next day. About one acre burned.
